Presentation title
Breathing and Orthodontics from Airway to Occlusion

Abstract

Breathing and orthodontics are closely interconnected, with craniofacial growth, airway function, and occlusion influencing one another throughout development. This lecture explores the relationship between breathing patterns, upper airway dimensions, dentofacial development, and different types of malocclusion from an evidence-based perspective. The presentation will discuss how orthodontists can recognize airway-related problems and critically evaluate the potential effects of common orthodontic interventions, including maxillary expansion, mandibular advancement, growth modification, and orthognathic surgery, on breathing and airway function. Current scientific evidence, clinical limitations, and areas of controversy will be highlighted. The lecture aims to provide clinicians with a practical framework for integrating airway awareness into orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning—while understanding both the possibilities and the limitations of orthodontic treatment in improving breathing.
