Surgical Management of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders: From Minimally Invasive Procedures to Total Joint Replacement
Abstract
Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) comprise a heterogeneous group of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint and associated structures. While most patients respond to conservative treatment, selected cases require surgical intervention. Contemporary management follows a stepwise approach, progressing from minimally invasive procedures, including arthrocentesis and arthroscopy, to open joint surgery and total joint replacement in advanced disease. This presentation reviews current indications, surgical options, treatment algorithms, and the importance of careful patient selection in achieving predictable functional outcomes.
