Presentation Title
The TMJ as a key factor in the success of Orthodontic treatment.
Abstract
It is well known that a successful orthodontic treatment should achieve esthetics, function and long-term stability. This stability is obtained by achieving harmony among the multiple components of the stomatognathic system that include teeth, muscles and the TMJ. Many orthodontists do not take into consideration the temporomandibular joints in the diagnostic process ignoring anatomical and functional aspects of this unique joint that could compromise the long-term stability of the orthodontic treatment jeopardizing the success of the treatment. The objective of this presentation is to provide an approach to diagnose and manage temporomandibular joint disorders in orthodontic patients, supported by evidence, to achieve the three main goals of orthodontic treatment.
